An thing I wrote in my early 30s that I thought was funny.

Text Box: Every time Neo downloaded a brain upgrade, he’d get slower and less responsive. When he asked Morpheus why, he’d be told his brain hardware is obsolete and no longer supported. Each rematch with Agent Smith would be flashier than the last, yet somehow nothing else improved—except it’s now harder to pull off moves that used to be effortless.Whenever a fight starts, Clippy pops up: “It looks like you’re in a fight. Want help?” The distraction gets Neo flattened.A massive brawl breaks out—Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, agents—no one’s punches connect. After an awkward pause, they realize they’re running incompatible versions of DirectFight™. Cue a sheepish update break.Fight scenes get interrupted by pop-ups and every billboard pushes spammy “enhancement” ads.Agents randomly stop responding at the tensest moment, annihilating the suspense. No patch notes. No explanation. To jack into the Matrix, the Osiris wouldn’t be a nimble little ship. It would be aircraft-carrier sized, powered by a fusion reactor, and still barely cope with the fan noise from cooling the Office Assistant. The crew has measured the CPU overhead of Clippy. Disabling it would make systems saner, faster, and less annoying. Trinity refuses, citing “amusement,” and no one can find the off switch anyway.Everyone gets randomly dumped back to the ship. Totally normal. Reconnecting gives an engaged tone. Despite the “always-on flat-rate” plan, sessions auto-disconnect at exactly two hours.Morpheus traces Agent Smith’s code path and finds it forked from MSN Messenger. Suddenly a lot makes sense.Smith lectures about Security™ while an eight-year-old cracks the new protocol in minutes and reskins him as a gorilla. The Agents deny it happened. It happens weekly. When Neo finally sees the Matrix’s true form, it’s not elegant green glyphs—it’s the Windows 3.1 3D-Maze screensaver at 640×480/60 Hz, on a GPU with a billion giga-quads. Migraines in 30 minutes; blue screens on the hour. The Architect is unchanged, except for an AOL logo on his white suit. Evil. Smug. Dial-up.The team discovers small, light, high-rate-of-fire weapons that never jam and never run out. Unbeatable, secure, cheap. They ignore them because the trigger’s in a different place. As the machines breach Zion and all seems lost, everything freezes: Matrix down, sentinels crash, Smith goes supercritical in fireworks. Humanity is saved. Root cause analysis: a middle-aged man opened BrittanySpearsNaked.exe.And finally—if Microsoft built the Matrix, Neo would inexplicably be a small black-and-white penguin.
